Choosing Top Selling Toys for Learning

Choosing one of the top selling toys of the year is a great way to decide on a gift for your child when there are just so many choices. I’m sure that when we were kids, our parents had an easier time in choosing what to buy. We have such a selection available to choose from now, how do we know which really are the best kids toys?

Bananagrams Game
Rory's Story Cubes

One way to choose is by using well known lists of top selling toys. An example would be Amazon's top 100 games. You can read reviews and be sure that you are buying tried and tested toys that both kids and their parents really enjoy.

But what do you do if you are looking for more than just the fun factor when you choose to buy one of this year’s best selling toys? By choosing toys and games that are also top educational toys, you really do get the best of both worlds for your child’s special gift.

Best Educational Toys

It’s important to know what separates the top learning toys from other popular sellers. To make it easy for you to choose, I have put together my top five questions to ask before you buy that all important gift.

  1. What skills does the manufacturer claim it develops?

Usually the box will have a reference guide that states whether they intend this toy to promote communication development, motor skills, social interaction etc.

  2. What areas of learning and development does my child need to work on?

Think carefully about your child’s strengths and weaknesses and select toys and games that support the weaker aspects of their development. If your child is getting services from a Speech Therapist or Occupational Therapist, this is a great time to ask their recommendation. They will be happy to help guide your choice.

  3. What does my child like to play with already?

This one is a delicate balance between giving them something they will love to play with because it is familiar and widening the scope of their interests. Watch carefully when they play with toys they don’t own already and you will usually spot a treasure! What toys do they just love at their therapy appointments, at the neighbor’s house or at Kindergarten?

  4. What do YOU like to play with?

This is a really important one. By choosing toys that you enjoy and are excited by as a parent, you will increase the chances that you will make the time to play with the toy with your child. Board games are great for playing together so bring back family games night!By playing together with your child on a regular basis you will tune in to their needs, be on hand to support all aspects of their development and spend quality time together. You will create a strong parent / child bond that will last a lifetime.

  5. No batteries please!

Many of the best selling toys on the market today are computer games or battery powered remote control type toys. Kids love these and of course they are great fun but often the learning potential is much less than some of the more traditionally designed toys that help your child to build their imagination. You will be surprised what delights you will find if you filter out all the “modern technology” from this selection. Skip by all the remote control toys and learning pads and take a close look at what is left. I can promise you will find some real quality toys hiding in there between the battery chargers and the replacement helicopter blades!
